Swanscombe is a small town, part of the Borough of Dartford on the north Kent coast in England. It is part of the civil parish of Swanscombe and Greenhithe .
Bone fragments and tools, representing the earliest humans known to have lived in England, have been found from 1935 onwards at the Barnfield Pit about 2 km outside the village. This site is now the Swanscombe Heritage Park .
The southeast of England has abundant resources of clay and chalk. Swanscombe was important in the early history of cement. The Swanscombe plant was subsequently acquired by John Bazley White & Co, which became the largest component of Blue Circle Industries when it formed in 1900. It finally shut down in 1990. Between 1840 and 1930 it was the largest cement plant in Britain. One of the large quarries created as a legacy of the cement industry, between Watling Street and the village of Stone, is the site of the Bluewater (shopping centre), one of the largest such centres in Europe.
An adjacent quarry is to be given up for housing – more than 6,000 houses will be built there. The development by Land Securities, known as ‘Eastern Quarry’, will comprise of three primary schools, a secondary school, a health and social care centre and more than 20 acres (8 ha) of new parkland, lakes and woodland
A plan was announced in October 2012 to build a major theme park on 872 acres of brown field land on the Swanscombe peninsula (the triangular piece of land that juts into the River Thames). The project, dubbed Paramount Kent, would create 27,000 jobs and as such would have the capacity to transform the local economy.

Greenhithe is a small town in north of the Borough of Dartford , Kent, England. It forms part of the civil parish of Swanscombe and Greenhithe.
At Greenhithe’s waterfront on the estuary of the River Thames it was possible to build wharves for transshipping corn, wood and other commodities; its largest cargoes were of chalk and lime. This led in turn to the development of the cement industry at nearby Swanscombe, although Greenhithe itself enjoyed a brief period of popularity during Victorian times as a tourist resort; Greenhithe Pier was built in 1842 but does not survive. Its manor house has been fully restored and the small town is accessible to the M25 motorway, High Speed 1’s Ebbsfleet International and, particularly relevant to its local economy, Bluewater . At the end of the 20th century a new life was breathed into the area and with the agreement to build new properties on the estate: Crest passed the challenge for repairing the house to PJ Livesey Group. After a £6m investment the pristinely ornate house is restored and it sits again in splendour.
The whole area is being redeveloped as part of the Thames Gateway regeneration project which has seen expansion of residential neighbourhoods of the town: Ingress Park and Waterstone Park. It is anticipated that Greenhithe will attract more affluent and upwardly mobile residents because of the proximity to the enormous shopping complex. This is reflected in increased property valuations, and an increasingly “gentrified” feel to the immediate area.
